The Science of Reading:

Using Proven Techniques for Learning

Seeing Stars: Unlocking Reading Potential

Within our Reading Wrangler classes, we harness the power of Lindamood-Bell's® Seeing Stars® program, a cornerstone of structured literacy. This program is instrumental in enhancing symbol imagery and fluency, and it addresses the full spectrum of reading skills, like phonemic awareness and writing. What sets the Seeing Stars program apart is its emphasis on symbol imagery – a fundamental aspect of phonics and phonemic awareness. Symbol imagery is the mind's capacity to form mental images of letters and words, a cognitive function that underpins reading proficiency in all aspects.

Visualizing and Verbalizing: A Transformative Reading Journey

Our Visualizing and Verbalizing approach is an exciting journey for learners. This program gets its users thinking out of the box and is rooted in the science of reading, and centers on enhancing comprehension through the development of concept imagery – the ability to transform words and concepts into mental pictures and vice versa. We utilize Lindamood-Bell's Visualizing and Verbalizing program to enhance vocabulary, foster critical thinking skills, and elevate expressive language.

Orton-Gillingham (OG): Unveiling Language's Sound-Structure

The strength of OG is that it understands that dyslexic minds matter.  Orthographic mapping and sound-symbol relationships are at the heart of the Orton-Gillingham Approach. Its comprehensive approach helps the student understand the language structure and strategies to help tackle reading. Our approach centers on teaching the sounds and structure of words, steering clear of guesswork or rote memorization.

Teacher-Created material

Our teacher-created materials, meticulously designed with best practices, offer an educational empowerment that provides accessible learning, ultimately unlocking your child's full reading potential, and fostering student independence.

Service Providers NLACRC

One-on-one Sessions

Students will work with one dedicated tutor for a set amount of time.  We will informally assess each student to determine where to start their instruction. Several topics will be addressed in the session (i.e., spelling, phonics, sight words, writing, and comprehension)

15-minute sessions

Students will work on an isolated skill for the entirety of the 15 minutes until mastery has been met.

Small group

Students will be grouped according to the focus of instruction. Maximum 4 students.

Assessments

Students will be informally assessed before the first tutoring session. Reading Wranglers will accept outside reading assessments instead of the fee.  Up-to-date client-submitted data helps us plan lessons accordingly.

Art Therapy

At Reading Wranglers, we believe that creativity is boundless. Our founder, Sarah Mael, recognizes the profound impact that words and art can have on a child's life, serving as the driving force behind one of our most cherished programs, "Exploring Art through Shel Silverstein."

This is an innovative program that beautifully intertwines Shel Silverstein's poetry with various art mediums. This unique fusion emphasizes writing, vocabulary, and social skills development. Through the harmonious blend of literature and art, young minds are encouraged to explore their voices, enrich their vocabulary, and foster safe connections within a supportive community.

Play Therapy and Group Playtime

Sarah is a passionate advocate for meeting her clients exactly where they are on their unique journeys. To achieve this, she wholeheartedly embraces play-based therapeutic approaches, ideally suited for individuals with autism, ADHD, and anxiety. Her philosophy is rooted in the Floortime-DIR model and relationship-based interventions.

These approaches, emphasizing the importance of play, facilitate a nurturing and inclusive environment that caters to each child's distinct needs, enabling growth, development, and success.
